Malaysia's New Vehicle Sales Surge by 33% in May

Malaysia experienced a significant boost in new vehicle sales in May, with a 32.7% increase compared to April 2023. According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), a total of 61,795 units were sold in May, surpassing the 46,583 units sold in April.

The sales were primarily driven by the fulfillment of backlogged orders and the launch of new models. MAA also noted that sales by the two national car manufacturers played a significant role in achieving this growth. Overall, the total industry volume for the year so far stands at 300,978 units, marking a 12.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

The year-to-date total production volume also rose by 18% compared to 2022. MAA expects the demand for new vehicles to remain resilient in June, although registration volume may be slightly moderated due to high backlogged orders.
