Luxury label Baume & Mercier is paying tribute to a luminary of modern art, Pierre Soulages with the introduction of a limited-edition Hampton timepiece.
Taking inspiration from the French artist's renowned series, Outrenoir, which uses black paint in various states and textures to play on one's perspective upon movement.
The timepiece features a stroke-over-stroke effect on the face, achieved with the use of 3D printing technology to evoke the very same technique used in the painting.
The brass dial, laser-etched from Candia stone, creates a matte effect with electroplated layers to give a semi-matte finish and diamond-ground hands coated with black PVD adding a touch of gold one each end, specially requested by Soulages himself as an analogy for the ‘passage of time.’
The stainless-steel sculpted case bears metallic engravings of “Hommage à Mr Soulages” and “Baume & Mercier” on the back with the addition of an anti-glare domed sapphire crystal. The timepiece also boasts a built-in interchangeable strap in black leather with square scales and a nubuck finish that fastens with a pin buckle in DLC steel.
The Hampton Hommage à Pierre Soulages will be produced in limited quantities of 102 watches, matching the artist's own age, and available exclusively upon pre-order now on Baume & Mercier.
